STIGMERGY

next

Stigmergy, mixed media installation, 2.5m x 1.5m (2004).

Stigmergy was an installation inspired by the foraging behaviour of ants. Using robots equipped with light sensors, and an arena with a glowpaint floor, the artificial ants gather food and leave glowing trails - analagous to the pheremone trails laid down by real ants.

The piece was an exhibition version of my Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems MSc project which evolved foraging rules in simulation and then transferred them to real robots.

About Stigmergy

Stigmergy is the concept of communicating by altering the environment, and is used by social insects to forage for food or build nests.
