Temperamental Equations is a piece by artist Sol Sneveldt which links sociology, meteorology and fine arts in a study about the human temperament. It is part of the wider Spring project, a collaboration between artists from the University of Brighton and meteorologists from the University of Reading.
I was asked to work with satellite data, recording weather patterns since about 1990, which Sol wanted to be able to colour herself and make into video projections. The Java software I wrote interpolated up the resolution of the data, which had been stored at a tiny size to save space, and allowed Sol to assign her own colour choices to the data values in each image.
The images presented here were made while developing the software.
